How a 4 a.m. routine built a global comic empire
In short: Before he was a household name, Scott Adams was a bank employee working dawn shifts. By waking at 4 a.m. to draw, he transformed a corporate satire strip into a worldwide phenomenon, eventually reaching 2,0/00 newspapers in 57 countries and 19 different languages.
The ascent of Dilbert was not an overnight success but a product of disciplined, early-morning labor. While working various roles at Pacific Bell between 1986 and 1995—including positions as a computer programmer and budget analyst—Adams used the pre-dawn hours to develop his craft. His first royalty check for the strip, which launched in 1989, was a modest $368.62 per month. However, through a strategy of including his email address in the panels to invite reader feedback, he grew the strip's reach from 100 newspapers in 1991 to 400 by 1994, eventually hitting 800 newspapers and allowing him to transition to full-time cartooning.
Adams's professional life was characterized by a blend of corporate expertise and unconventional experimentation. An MBA graduate from UC Berkeley, he applied business concepts to his satire, most notably in his 1996 book, *The Dilbert Principle*. His ventures extended beyond the page into the food industry with Scott Adams Foods, Inc. In 1999, he introduced the 'Dilberito,' a vegetarian microwave burrito. Despite his goal to create 'the blue jeans of food,' the product struggled with taste and side effects, leading him to exit the business in 2003 after significant losses.
In his later years, Adams's career shifted toward independent political commentary via his 'Real Coffee' YouTube channel. This era was marked by significant controversy; in February 2023, following racist remarks, major distributors like Andrews McMeel Syndication and newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post severed ties with him. While he moved his work to the Locals platform as 'Dilbert Reborn,' his later life was also shaped by personal challenges, including a diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2025 and physical struggles with focal dystonia and semi-paralysis in his left hand.
