In short: Seal rose from a turbulent childhood in London to become a multi-Grammy-winning icon. Known for his distinctive voice and facial scars caused by discoid lupus erythematosus, he navigated early poverty and health crises to define the sound of the 1990s with hits like Crazy and Kiss from a Rose.

Born in 1963 to Nigerian and Brazilian parents, Seal's early life was marked by instability. After leaving home at 15, he spent years in London performing in local clubs and bars while struggling financially. His breakthrough arrived in 1990 when he provided vocals and lyrics for Adamski’s hit single Killer. This success led to a deal with ZTT Records and the release of his self-titled 1991 debut, which featured the international hit Crazy and earned him a historic hat-trick of wins at the 1992 Brit Awards.

His second self-titled album, released in 1994, cemented his status despite a period of intense personal hardship. During its production, Seal faced a near-fatal car crash, pneumonia, and severe postviral fatigue. These experiences infused his music with a new, melancholic depth. While the single Kiss from a Rose initially performed modestly, its inclusion on the Batman Forever soundtrack propelled it to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1995, eventually winning Grammy Awards for Record and Song of the Year.

Beyond his studio work, Seal has maintained a diverse career, serving as a coach on The Voice Australia and collaborating with artists ranging from Jeff Beck to Herbie Hancock. His life has often drawn media attention, particularly during his marriage to model Heidi Klum, which lasted from 2005 to 2014. Despite the public scrutiny, Seal has consistently returned to his musical roots, continuing to release albums like 7 and Standards while maintaining his reputation as a soulful, genre-blending performer.
