In short: Released in 2012 by Finnish developer Joonas Rikkonen, SCP – Containment Breach turns the simple act of blinking into a life-or-death struggle. Trapped in a collapsing facility housing supernatural threats, you must navigate procedurally generated corridors while avoiding entities that only move when you look away, all while uncovering a dark conspiracy.

The game centers on D-9341, a disposable test subject caught in a catastrophic failure at a secretive research facility. The core mechanic revolves around a blink meter that forces the player to close their eyes at regular intervals. This is a lethal vulnerability when facing SCP-173, a sculpture that rapidly closes the distance and kills the player the moment they are not being observed. This tension is amplified by a procedurally generated map, ensuring that no two escape attempts are identical.

Beyond the immediate threat of SCP-173, the facility is overrun by other anomalies, including SCP-106, a malevolent entity that traps victims in a pocket dimension, and SCP-079, a sentient artificial intelligence. Documents scattered throughout the site reveal that the breach was not an accident but a deliberate act of sabotage by Chaos Insurgency double agents. The player's ability to save and reload their progress is explained in-game as a side effect of the Spiral Gestalt, a phenomenon the protagonist was once demoted for studying.

The game offers four distinct endings depending on the player's choices at the facility's exits. These outcomes range from being detained by the Nine-Tailed Fox task force to being caught in a nuclear detonation intended to destroy the indestructible SCP-682. Regardless of the path taken, the experience is defined by its oppressive atmosphere and unpredictable design, which critics have praised for delivering genuine terror despite the game's modest technical origins.

Since its debut, the project has left a lasting impact on indie horror. Its success led Rikkonen to pursue formal game development studies at the University of Turku. The legacy continues today, with community-led efforts like the 2026 Steam release ensuring the game remains playable on modern systems, while its core concepts continue to inspire new titles and virtual reality remakes.
