In short: It starts with a civil question and a request for evidence. But as the relentless inquiries pile up, you realize you aren't in a debate; you are being exhausted. This is sealioning, a sophisticated form of trolling that uses the mask of sincerity to overwhelm its targets.

Sealioning is a specific type of online harassment characterized by persistent, bad-faith requests for information. Unlike traditional aggressive trolling, the 'sealioner' maintains a facade of politeness and a commitment to reasonable debate. They often target individuals with tangential or previously addressed questions, feigning ignorance to force the target into a cycle of endless explanation. The goal is not true discourse, but to exhaust the target's patience and attention.

The tactic functions much like a denial-of-service attack on a computer network, but directed at a human being. By inundating a person with incessant demands for proof, the attacker waits for the moment the target finally snaps. Once the target reacts with anger, the sealioner can pivot, portraying themselves as the aggrieved, reasonable party and the target as irrational or closed-minded. This can involve the 'Just Asking Questions' maneuver, where misleading statements are framed as innocent inquiries.

The term traces back to a September 19, 2014, Wondermark comic strip by David Malki titled 'The Terrible Sea Lion.' In the strip, a character is relentlessly interrogated by a sea lion under the guise of civility. While some have linked the term to the Gamergate harassment campaign, others, like philosopher Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, note the practice's inherent obnoxiousness, arguing that while reason is vital, it does not require infinite endurance. The phenomenon is so pervasive that in 2020, Merriam-Webster identified it as one of the 'Words We're Watching' due to its increasing use in digital spaces.
