From pharmacy founder to Speaker: The parliamentary career of Seah Kian Peng
In short: Seah Kian Peng has navigated a diverse career spanning corporate leadership and high-level politics. From his early days establishing pharmacy chains to his current role as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore, his trajectory reflects a blend of public service, private sector management, and the complexities of modern governance.
Born in 1961, Seah Kian Peng grew up in a family of six, the son of a printing firm line worker and a mother who supplemented their income through sewing. His academic path led him to the University of New South Wales on a Colombo Plan scholarship, where he earned a first-class honours degree in building. Following his National Service, Seah began his professional life in the civil service and government-linked companies, eventually playing a pivotal role in launching NTUC Healthcare’s pharmacy chain.
His corporate career culminated in his tenure as CEO of NTUC FairPrice from 2010 to 2022. Parallel to his business roles, Seah entered the political arena as a People's Action Party candidate for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in 2006. Over the following decades, he held various parliamentary responsibilities, including serving as Deputy Speaker from 2011 to 2016 and chairing the Social and Family Development Government Parliamentary Committee. In 2010, he notably spearheaded a private member's bill to amend the Maintenance of Parents Act.
Seah’s political career reached a new milestone in 2023 when he was elected Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore following the resignation of his predecessor. His tenure has not been without scrutiny; he faced public controversy in 2020 for his conduct during COVID-19 lockdown measures and issued an apology in 2026 after being observed nodding off during a parliamentary debate. Despite these challenges, he remains a central figure in Singaporean politics, having been renominated as Speaker by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in June 2025 and continuing his service as the Member of Parliament for the Braddell Heights division.
