Before it became a global icon, Shakey's Pizza was a jazz-fueled beer hall.
In short: Founded in 1954, Shakey's Pizza began as a Sacramento parlor where the founder played Dixieland jazz and served only beer because his ovens were not yet ready. This unlikely start sparked a national franchise, eventually evolving into a cultural staple across the Pacific Rim, far outlasting its original American roots.
Sherwood "Shakey" Johnson and Ed Plummer opened the first Shakey's Pizza in Sacramento, California, on April 30, 1954. The name "Shakey" was a moniker Johnson earned due to nerve damage from malaria during World War II. In its earliest days, the establishment prioritized atmosphere over food; Johnson personally performed Dixieland jazz on the piano and hired the Silver Dollar Jazz Band to entertain patrons. This musical focus was so central that the chain became famous for its regional radio jazz programs and encouraged customers to sing along to barbershop lyrics printed on menus.
The business model expanded rapidly, becoming the first franchise pizza chain in the United States. By 1968, the chain had grown to 342 locations. Interestingly, Johnson claimed the company conducted little formal market research, instead choosing store locations based on where Kinney Shoes opened branches. The chain reached its peak influence in the 1970s, when it became a hub for youth sports teams and families in Southern California, known for its long picnic tables and large kitchen windows that allowed children to watch their pizzas being prepared.
While the American footprint dwindled—dropping from approximately 500 stores in 1974 to just 43 as of April 2026—the brand found a second life in the Philippines. After entering the market in 1975, it became a massive success under the San Miguel Corporation and later the Prieto family. Today, the brand is managed by Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures Inc., which operates hundreds of stores across the Philippines and other international markets. The company has since pivoted toward modern casual dining, even launching its own volleyball leagues, marking a significant evolution from its humble, beer-and-banjo beginnings in a remodeled grocery store.
