In short: Founded in 1896 to challenge the traditional imperial examination system, Shanghai Jiao Tong University evolved from a practical industrial school into a modern research giant. Its history mirrors China's turbulent twentieth century, surviving political shifts, massive faculty relocations, and strategic mergers to become a member of the elite C9 League.

Established as Nanyang Public School, the institution was the brainchild of Sheng Xuanhuai, who sought to modernize China by prioritizing Western engineering and practical education. Under the guidance of the Guangxu Emperor, the school moved away from classical studies, focusing instead on business and political sciences. By the early twentieth century, the curriculum was heavily influenced by Western models, with American instructors filling critical faculty gaps in civil and electrical engineering until the 1920s, when a new generation of returned student-educators took the helm.

The university's structure underwent radical transformations following the establishment of the People's Republic of China. In 1952, the institution was reorganized into three core pillars: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and shipbuilding. This period also saw significant geographic shifts; in 1956, the university began a major relocation to Xi'an. By 1959, this split resulted in the formal separation of the Xi'an campus into Xi'an Jiaotong University, while the Shanghai branch retained the name Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Modern growth has been defined by strategic consolidation. The university expanded its reach through the 1999 merger with Shanghai Agricultural College and the 2005 integration of the Shanghai Second Medical University. Today, the institution operates 33 schools and 12 affiliated hospitals. However, international relations have recently faced scrutiny; in 2025, the University of Michigan terminated its long-standing partnership with the university following espionage-related charges against exchange students who were discovered during military exercises in the United States.
