The woman shattering glass ceilings in the British Army
In short: Sharon Nesmith is rewriting the history of British military leadership. From a university cadetship to becoming the highest-ranking female officer in the nation's history, her ascent through the ranks represents a series of unprecedented milestones for women in the armed forces.
Born in Northumberland in June 1970, Sharon Nesmith’s military journey began through a university cadetship while studying biological sciences at the University of Edinburgh. After commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Women's Royal Army Corps in September 1988, she later transitioned to the Royal Corps of Signals in July 1991. Her career has been marked by deployments in diverse regions, including the Balkans, Iraq, and Latvia.
Nesmith has consistently broken barriers within the British Army. In August 2014, she became the first woman to lead a British Army brigade, specifically the 1st Signal Brigade, which comprised between 1,500 and 5,000 troops. She followed this by becoming the first woman to lead a division-level formation in 2021. Her rapid progression continued through the ranks of lieutenant general and, eventually, general.
In June 2024, Nesmith reached a historic pinnacle when she was appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff. By securing this role, she became the British Army's first female general, setting a record for the highest-ranking woman in the service's history. Alongside this promotion, she was named an aide-de-camp general to King Charles III.
Beyond her operational and command roles, Nesmith has held significant administrative and honorary positions. She served as the Director (Personnel) at Army Headquarters starting in March 2019 and held various Colonel Commandant roles. She received a Damehood as a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath during the 2024 New Year Honours.
