How a coin flip launched a career from Disney to X-Men
In short: Before he was a superhero, Shawn Ashmore’s career was decided by chance. For years, casting directors used a coin toss to choose between him and his identical twin, Aaron. From childhood commercials to international stardom, his journey reveals the unpredictable nature of the acting industry.
The acting career of Shawn Ashworld began with a stroke of luck. While appearing in commercials during elementary school, his identical twin brother, Aaron, was originally cast for a role, but fell ill on the day of filming. Shawn stepped in as his replacement, marking his first professional role. This early era of work, which included roles in Nickelodeon's Animorphs and Disney Channel productions like Cadet Kelly, eventually led to his breakout as Bobby Drake, also known as Iceman, in the X-Men film franchise.
Ashmore's versatility extends far beyond the superhero genre. He has navigated diverse roles, from portraying the legendary Canadian athlete Terry Fox in the 2005 film Terry to playing the FBI agent Mike Weston in The Following. He has also found significant success in interactive media, providing voice and motion capture for major video game titles such as Quantum Break, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, and Alan Wake II.
Beyond the screen, Ashmore's personal history is marked by deep family ties. He and his brother share matching 'GMA' tattoos on their wrists, an acronym for 'Good Man Ashmore,' honoring their step-grandfather Gangu Jagtiani. Despite the global fame brought by the X-Men franchise, which grossed US$296.3 million worldwide, Ashmore has maintained a career rooted in both dramatic television and high-stakes digital performance.
