How a 150-to-1 underdog became one of snooker's most decorated Triple Crown winners
In short: Shaun Murphy shocked the sporting world in 2005 when he won the World Championship as a qualifier with 150-to-1 odds. Since that breakout victory, the player nicknamed The Magician has cemented his legacy, becoming one of only ten individuals to secure the prestigious career Triple Crown in professional snooker.
Born in Harlow in 1982, Murphy turned professional at age 15. His path to stardom was unconventional; he entered the 2005 World Championship ranked 48th in the world. As only the third qualifier to ever win the tournament, his performance was a historic anomaly. He defeated former world champions including John Higgins, Steve Davis, and Peter Ebdon before overcoming Matthew Stevens in the final. This victory not only doubled his career earnings but also established his reputation for long potting and a precise, straight cue action.
Beyond his 2005 World Championship title, Murphy has demonstrated remarkable longevity and consistency. He completed the Triple Crown—comprising the World Championship, the UK Championship, and the Masters—by winning the latter in 2015. His career is marked by thirteen ranking titles and over 700 century breaks. Notably, he has shown a flair for the extraordinary, becoming the first player to compile three maximum 147 breaks in a single calendar year in 2014.
Murphy’s career has not been without turbulence. He has navigated high-pressure environments, including a period of intense media scrutiny during his 2009 World Championship run and a significant personal transformation in 2013, when he lost 19 kilograms to improve his stamina and concentration. Despite the challenges of the so-called Crucible curse—which suggests first-time champions struggle to defend their title—Murphy has remained a fixture at the top of the sport, maintaining a world ranking as high as number three for three consecutive seasons.
