The 'Poultry King' and the legal labyrinth of Pakistani power
In short: From managing a family business in exile to becoming the 17th Chief Minister of Punjab, Hamza Shahbaz's rise is a study in dynastic persistence. His career is marked by a complex interplay of immense wealth, high-stakes legal battles, and the volatile mechanics of Pakistani provincial politics.
Hamza Shahbaz, the eldest son of Shehbaz Sharif, rose to prominence within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) while his father and uncle, Nawaz Sharif, were in exile following the 1999 coup. During this period, he managed the family's business interests, earning the moniker 'Poultry King of Punjab.' His formal political trajectory began in 1999, though he initially contested as an independent in 2008 before joining the PML-N. By 2016, he was informally recognized as a deputy to both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab.
His ascent to the Chief Ministership of Punjab in April 2022 was defined by intense legal scrutiny. Although he secured the position with 197 votes against Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court eventually ruled his tenure non-existent and legally invalid. This judicial intervention rendered all orders issued during his brief term void, leading to Elahi being declared the 19th Chief Minister. This sequence highlights the precarious nature of executive power in the province, where legislative majorities can be overturned by judicial interpretation.
Parallel to his political career, Shahbaz has faced significant scrutiny regarding his personal wealth. Reports indicate his declared assets surged from roughly Rs 583,191 in 2008 to over Rs 250 million by 2014, with a 2018 declaration reaching Rs 411 million. These assets include 11 non-agricultural land lots, 150 kanals of agricultural land, and shares in 21 companies. He was arrested in 2019 on money laundering allegations involving 28 anonymous accounts, but these proceedings were eventually discontinued in 2022 after his father assumed the premiership, sparking debate over the politicization of the judiciary.
Beyond the boardroom and the assembly, Shahbaz's role in the party involves strategic appointments, such as introducing figures like Atta Tarar and Mohsin Naqvi into the PML-N fold. His career serves as a primary example of how family lineage, industrial success, and navigating the 'legal-political' gauntlet shape leadership in Pakistan's most populous province.
