In short: Formed in Brisbane in 2009, the indie pop trio Sheppard rose to prominence with their multi-platinum hit Geronimo. Beyond their chart success, the siblings have navigated complex family funding controversies and vocal surgery, eventually relocating to Nashville in 2023 to chase a new chapter of international recognition and musical evolution.

The band began as a duo featuring siblings George and Amy Sheppard, who were born and raised in Papua New Guinea before moving to Brisbane. Their early career was uniquely supported by their parents, Greg and Linda, who funded the group and established their own label, Empire of Song. This financial backing later became a point of public scrutiny when Greg Sheppard was identified in a 2015 media investigation regarding money laundering allegations; however, all charges against him were ultimately dismissed in 2024.

Musically, the group found rapid success with their 2014 debut album, Bombs Away, which peaked at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their breakout single, Geronimo, spent three weeks at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart, eventually achieving 5× platinum certification. The band’s trajectory has been marked by high-profile performances, including the 2020 AFL Grand Final and a historic 2024 concert on the Great Barrier Reef. Despite these achievements, the group has faced internal challenges, including the 2019 departure of guitarist Michael Butler and a significant throat injury that forced George Sheppard to undergo surgery.

In recent years, the band has aggressively pursued international markets. After releasing a string of albums, including Kaleidoscope Eyes and Zora, they moved to Nashville in August 2023 to seek greater success in the United States. Their creative process remains collaborative, often involving compromise between the siblings and songwriter Jay Bovino to ensure their pop melodies maintain broad appeal. As they prepare their fifth studio album, Beautiful Everything, the band continues to evolve, balancing their Australian roots with a clear drive toward global relevance.
