When a haunted house becomes the ultimate metaphor for a midlife crisis
In short: Shining Vale blends satire, comedy, and horror to explore the unraveling of a dysfunctional family. After moving to a small town, a former novelist struggling with sobriety and creative stagnation begins to suspect that her new home is not just unsettling, but actively possessed by malevolent, lingering spirits.
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the series centers on Patricia Phelps, a woman who gained fame for her raunchy novels on female empowerment. Following a public infidelity scandal, she relocates her family to a house with a dark history of atrocities. As Pat navigates a life defined by 16 years of sobriety, a stalled career, and distance from her teenage children, the boundary between her internal struggle with depression and the supernatural reality of her home begins to blur.
The production journey of the show was extensive, beginning in January 2018 when Showtime initially developed the project. It eventually moved to Starz, which ordered an eight-episode first season in April 2021. The series features a notable ensemble cast, including Courteney Cox as Pat, alongside Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, and Judith Light. Filming for the pilot took place in Los Angeles in March 2021, with the remainder of the first season shooting later that summer.
Critical reception for the first season was generally favorable, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 71% approval rating. Critics noted that while the show's attempt to balance comedy and horror could feel strained, the lead performance by Cox provided a necessary spark. Despite a second season renewal in May 2022 and its subsequent premiere in October 2023, Starz canceled the series in December 2023. Following its removal from the original platform, the show found a new home on Max in January 2025.
