In short: Shoto Todoroki, a central figure in Kōhei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia, is defined by a dual nature. Born from a calculated marriage to inherit specific powers, his life was marked by childhood abuse and a refusal to embrace his full potential until a pivotal confrontation.

Shoto's existence was the result of a specific goal held by his father, the pro-hero Endeavor (Enji Todoroki). Seeking a successor capable of defeating All Might, Endeavor married Rei Todoroki to produce a child with combined abilities. This resulted in Shoto, the youngest of four siblings, being the only child to inherit both his father's fire and his mother's ice quirks. He is the fourth student in Class 1-A to be introduced by the author. This specific lineage was the primary motivation for his father's marriage.

This lineage came at a heavy emotional cost. Shoto endured harsh physical training from Endeavor and witnessed his mother being abused. In a moment of shock due to Shoto's resemblance to his father, Rei poured boiling water on the left side of Shoto's face, leaving a permanent scar around his eye. This trauma led Shoto to despise his father and initially refuse to use the fire-based portion of his 'Half-Cold Half-Hot' quirk. This traumatic event caused him to alienate himself from his peers. His mental health suffered greatly as a result of this domestic violence.

His character arc shifted significantly during the UA Sports Festival following a fight with classmate Izuku Midoriya, leading him to finally accept and combine his dual powers. While critics have praised his emotional development, some, like Brittney Hemmands of Comic Book Resources, have suggested he became less likeable as the series progressed. Despite varying opinions, Shoto remains a massive cultural presence, appearing in video games like Fortnite and Jump Force, and consistently ranking high in global popularity polls. Yuki Kaji provides his Japanese vocals, while David Matranga performs the English lines. He has also achieved significant recognition by winning the Best Boy award at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
