From a single bungalow to India's premier commerce institution
In short: In 1926, a small group of businessmen began teaching commerce in a hired bungalow with just twelve students. Today, Shri Ram College of Commerce stands as a powerhouse of economic education, having evolved from a specialized school into one of India's most highly-ranked academic institutions.
The institution's roots trace back to 1920, when seven prominent businessmen, including Sir Shri Ram, Master Shiv Pershad, and Lala Chunnamal, established the Commercial Education Trust on Basant Panchmi. This led to the creation of 'The Commercial School' in Charkhewalan, Delhi. By 1926, the institution became the Commercial College, affiliated with the University of Delhi, and began its academic journey in a hired bungalow at 8, Darya Ganj with only four faculty members.
The college underwent significant transformations throughout the 20th century. In 1932, it was upgraded to a Degree College. It reached a major milestone in 1951 during its Silver Jubilee when it was rechristened Shri Ram College of Commerce to honor its founder. The campus expanded significantly in 1954 when it moved to its current location in the North Campus of the University of Delhi. It also transitioned to a coeducational institution in 1957.
In recent decades, the college has solidified its reputation for excellence. In 2016, it received an 'A+' accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a CGPA of 3.65, the highest score for any University of Delhi college that year. By its second accreditation cycle in 2023, it achieved an 'A++' grade with a score of 3.75. In 2023, multiple publications, including India Today, Open Magazine, and Outlook ICARE, ranked it as the number one commerce college in India.
Beyond academics, the college has a history of student-led initiatives and infrastructural milestones. In the 1960s, students participated in a Shramdaan Movement to build a swimming pool and gymnasium, making it the first college in the University of Delhi to feature a swimming pool. The institution also established its Placement Cell in 1996 and introduced the unique, self-financed Post Graduate Diploma in Global Business Operations in 1999.
