A high-stakes heist debut that struggled to balance ambition with a predictable script
In short: Jason Sanjay's directorial debut, Sigma, arrived with significant industry backing and a high-profile production team. Despite the anticipation surrounding the project and its lead, Sundeep Kishan, the final result left critics divided. While the film's technical polish earned praise, its narrative execution failed to match its ambitious commercial premise.
The journey to Sigma began in August 2023 when Lyca Productions announced Jason Sanjay would helm a feature film. The production process was marked by intense speculation regarding the lead role, with various young actors like Kavin and Dhruv Vikram linked to the project before Sundeep Kishan was officially confirmed in November 2024. Sundeep noted that his decision to join was driven by the script's unique moments and the director's infectious energy, a connection facilitated by a chance meeting with the director's father, C. Joseph Vijay.
Principal photography moved at a rapid pace. By November 2025, Lyca CEO G.K.M. Tamil Kumaran highlighted that the team had completed 95% of the film in just 65 shooting days, an impressive feat for a first-time director. The film, which features Faria Abdullah as the romantic lead and a supporting cast including Sampath Raj and Shiv Panditt, was originally slated for a July 2026 release. However, the date was shifted to October 2026 to avoid a box office conflict with a film starring C. Joseph Vijay.
Upon release, the film faced a lukewarm reception. Critics acknowledged the production values and technical expertise—supported by composer Thaman S and cinematographer Krishnan Vasant—but pointed to fundamental issues in the writing. Reviewers like Janani K and M. Suganth noted that despite having the necessary ingredients for an engaging heist comedy, the film suffered from a clichéd narrative and a lack of creative invention. Ultimately, Sigma serves as a case study in how high production scale and strong technical foundations cannot always compensate for a predictable, uninspired screenplay.
