The Chicken's Neck: India's narrowest, most critical lifeline to its northeastern states
In short: The Siliguri Corridor is a fragile strip of land, often called the Chicken's Neck, serving as the sole terrestrial link between India's mainland and its eight northeastern states. This narrow passage supports over 40 million people and remains a primary focus for national security, military logistics, and regional connectivity strategies.
Formed in the wake of the 1947–1948 partition of Bengal, the Siliguri Corridor is a geographically constrained region in West Bengal. Its dimensions are a subject of varying interpretation, with estimates suggesting a length between 170 and 200 kilometers and a width ranging from 17 to 60 kilometers. At its most constricted point, the corridor narrows to approximately 20 to 22 kilometers. This vital bottleneck is bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and China's Chumbi Valley, making it a focal point for geopolitical tension and strategic planning.
The corridor acts as a logistical lifeline for nearly 50 million people residing in India's northeast. Because all land transportation to this region must pass through this single access point, India has invested heavily in infrastructure to mitigate vulnerability. Initiatives include the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which focuses on upgrading railway lines and highways to increase freight capacity. Furthermore, India is actively pursuing alternative routes, such as the proposed Hili–Mahendraganj Corridor and various transnational connectivity projects involving Bangladesh and maritime trade, to reduce reliance on this singular passage.
Military security remains paramount. The Indian Army considers the corridor its strongest defensive line, yet planners remain wary of potential threats. The area is heavily fortified with advanced assets, including S-400 air defense systems, BrahMos missile regiments, and Rafale fighter aircraft stationed at Hasimara. In late 2025, India further reinforced its eastern frontier by establishing new military garrisons at Bamunigaon, Kishanganj, and Chopra. These bases are designed to enhance surveillance and rapid troop deployment, ensuring that the corridor remains secure against both external geopolitical pressures and internal security challenges from various militant groups.
