How a late-night liquor run inspired an indie rock band's name
In short: In 2000, a group of Los Angeles musicians formed a band with a name derived from a local liquor store. From stolen drinks on international flights to heavy shoegaze textures, discover the unexpected origins and evolution of Silversuncun Pickups.
The band's identity is rooted in the Silver Lake music scene of Los Angeles. The name Silversun Pickups actually stems from Silversun, a liquor store situated across from the Silverlake Lounge. The term 'Silversun pickup' referred to a habit of friends arriving late at night to purchase alcohol from the shop. This sense of atmosphere extends to the band's early sound, which was characterized by a shoegaze style featuring heavy, distorted guitar overdubs, often drawing comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Smashing Pumpkins.
The core lineup has remained remarkably stable since the early 2000s. While the original 2000 formation included guitarist Jack Kennedy and drummer Elvira Gonzalez, they departed in 2002. They were replaced by keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Christopher Guanlao, creating a lineup that has largely persisted for decades. The band's foundation even traces back to a 1994 flight from Los Angeles to London, where lead singer Brian Aubert first met bassist Nikki Monninger after noticing her taking alcohol from the drink cart.
Over their career, the band's sonic architecture has shifted significantly. While their first two albums, Carnavas (2006) and Swoon (2009), leaned into shoegaze, later works like Neck of the Woods (2012) and Better Nature (2015) integrated prominent electronic elements. Their discography has continued through the decades, moving from the breakthrough success of singles like 'Lazy Eye' to more recent explorations in albums like Physical Thrills (2022) and Tenterhooks (2026).
