How a historical novel inspired a modern masterpiece of human connection
In short: Before finding success, creator Misaki Takamatsu faced constant rejection from publishers. The breakthrough came from an unexpected source: Ryōtarō Shiba's 1966 historical novel, Sekigahara. By reimagining historical archetypes through a contemporary lens, Takamatsu transformed a standard school life story into a celebrated exploration of human relationships.
The manga series Skip and Loafer, written and illustrated by Misaki Takamatsu, began serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon in August 2018. To find inspiration after a period of repeated rejections, Takamatsu turned to Ryōtarō Shiba's 1966 novel, Sekigahara. The character dynamics in the novel—specifically the relationship between Mitsunari Ishida and Sakon Shima—served as the blueprint for the manga's protagonists, Mitsumi Iwakura and Sousuke Shima. This connection is mirrored in the protagonists' backgrounds, as Mitsumi's rural upbringing reflects the outsider status of Ishida's character. This thematic link helped the series find its unique voice.
Takamatsu utilized the creative freedom of a seinen magazine to reconstruct shōjo manga elements. Rather than following a typical dramatic hook, she focused on human relationships and character depth, aiming to portray the "humanity beneath" common archetypes. This approach, centered on school life and romance without a singular, rigid goal, has resonated deeply with audiences. By March 2024, the manga had reached over 2.3 million copies in circulation.
The series has garnered significant critical acclaim across different mediums. In 2023, the 47th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category was secured by the manga. Its anime adaptation, produced by P.A. The 29th Shanghai Television Festival granted it the Best Storytelling Award during its April to June 2023 broadcast. The story's success has even extended to the stage, with a musical adaptation scheduled for 2026 in Tokyo and Osaka. The anime's popularity was further cemented by its nomination for Best Romance at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Additionally, the series was recognised as a Jury Recommended Work at the 2020 Japan Media Arts Festival.
