In short: Keigo Shinzo's Hirayasumi follows Hiroto Ikuta, a 29-year-old freelance worker who inherits a house from an elderly friend. This gentle story of intergenerational connection and urban living has captured critical acclaim, spawning a television drama and an upcoming anime series, proving that quiet, character-driven narratives resonate deeply with modern audiences.

The narrative centers on Hiroto Ikuta, a man from Yamagata who abandoned his acting dreams after repeated audition failures. Now working at a fishing pond, his life takes a turn when he inherits a house from Hanae Wada, an 83-year-old retired school cook he frequently visited. This inheritance transforms his lifestyle, as he becomes the guardian for his 18-year-old cousin, Natsumi Kobayashi, who has moved to the city to apply for art school. The series explores the rhythms of their shared life in the inherited residence, grounding its charm in the mundane interactions between generations.

Serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits since April 2021, the manga has garnered significant recognition. It won the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award in 2026 and received praise from notable artists like Taiyo Matsumoto and Inio Asano. The creator, Keigo Shinzo, famously took a hiatus between October 2023 and January 2024 to ensure the quality of his work, stating he wanted to draw without regrets. This dedication to craft is reflected in its consistent performance on prestigious lists, including the Manga Taisho and the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings.

The cultural footprint of Hirayasumi has expanded well beyond the printed page. A television drama adaptation aired on NHK General TV in late 2025, spanning twenty 15-minute episodes. Looking ahead, an anime adaptation produced by Production +h. is scheduled for a January 2027 premiere. As the manga concludes its run in October 2026, it leaves behind a legacy as a celebrated piece of contemporary seinen manga, having been licensed for English release by Viz Media and nominated for international honors like the Eisner Award.
