A nun with a PhD in forensics solves crimes in the 1960s Cotswolds
In short: Sister Boniface is no ordinary nun. Living in the fictional town of Great Slaughter, she balances her religious duties at St. Vincent's Convent with her role as a scientific adviser to the local police. Armed with a doctorate in forensic science, she brings modern investigative rigor to the English countryside.
Created by Jude Tindall, Sister Boniface Mysteries is a spin-off of the popular Father Brown series. The character of Sister Boniface first appeared in the 2013 Father Brown episode 'The Bride of Christ'. While the series is set in the early 1960s, the show's production utilizes real-world locations to anchor its period aesthetic. St. Vincent's Convent is filmed at Princethorpe College in Warwickshire, while the village hall and local pub scenes are shot in Gloucestershire and Broad Campden, respectively.
The show centers on the collaborative relationship between the nun and the local police force. Sister Boniface works alongside Detective Inspector Sam Gillespie, a former army officer, and Detective Sergeant Felix Livingstone, who is on secondment from Bermuda. The series has been praised for its optimistic tone and the way it portrays a strong female lead who is actively celebrated by her male colleagues. Critics have noted that the show offers a lighthearted, cosy take on the whodunnit genre, enhanced by its picturesque 1960s setting.
The production history of the show is marked by both growth and loss. Following a successful 10-episode first series that premiered in 2022, the show was commissioned for subsequent seasons. However, show creator Jude Tindall passed away shortly after filming for the fourth series began in July 2024. Despite this, the series has continued to expand its reach, with the fourth series arriving on streaming platforms in the US and UK throughout 2025. The show remains a collaborative effort, sharing several writers and directors with its parent series, Father Brown.
