In short: Founded in 2004 by bassist Michael League, Snarky Puppy defies easy categorization. Part jazz fusion, part funk, and part pop, this international superband functions as a large, evolving unit. With over 40 musicians having contributed to their sound, the group remains a cohesive, essential family rather than a revolving door.

The band began in 2004 as a 10-piece group in Denton, Texas, formed by Michael League after he failed to place into any University of North Texas school ensembles. League famously described the project as his way to get to play. Over two decades, the group has expanded into a global force, winning five Grammy Awards and maintaining a regular roster of about 20 members. Despite the frequent rotation of players, six of the original 10 members from their first studio album, The Only Constant, remain active in the band today.

League rejects the label of a collective, viewing the group instead as a large band where members are sometimes absent due to other commitments. This structure emerged organically; when original members were unavailable for gigs, substitutes were brought in. If they performed well, they were added to the band's Rolodex. This process allowed the group to build its sound 'brick by brick,' with each new personality influencing the collective memory of the music. Even those who play with the band the least have performed hundreds of gigs, fostering a deep sense of intimacy and shared purpose.

Beyond their own recordings, the band established the GroundUP Music imprint in 2012 to support lesser-known artists. This commitment to the broader musical community extends to their educational work, as the band frequently hosts master classes and workshops across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Their influence is also cemented through the GroundUP Music Festival, which debuted in Miami in 2017 and expanded to Alberobello, Italy, in 2025. Through their 14 albums and constant touring, Snarky Puppy continues to evolve, prioritizing long, groove-oriented compositions that allow their complex, familial unit to explore the music together.
