How a teenage prodigy climbed to the top of the UFC rankings
In short: Born in 1997, Song Yadong began training mixed martial arts at just 13 years old. Since his professional debut before age sixteen, the Chinese fighter has become a dominant force in the bantamweight division, securing multiple performance bonuses and a top-tier ranking through sheer technical precision and resilience.
Song Yadong's ascent in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been marked by high-stakes victories and consistent excellence. Currently ranked #2 in the Meta UFC bantamweight rankings as of September 5, 2026, Song has demonstrated remarkable versatility in the cage. His career is defined by a diverse array of finishing techniques, ranging from first-round knockouts to complex submissions like the guillotine choke.
His path to the elite level involved navigating significant setbacks and injuries. For instance, he was forced to withdraw from a scheduled bout against Frankie Saenz in November 2018 due to injury, and later pulled out of a March 2019 matchup against Alejandro Pérez for undisclosed reasons. Despite these hurdles, Song has maintained a high level of performance, earning seven Performance of the Night awards—a feat that ties him with fighters like Conor McGregor for the fourth most in UFC history.
Song's technical skill is evidenced by his ability to secure wins via various methods. He has achieved victories through technical knockouts, unanimous decisions, and even a technical decision in a 2025 bout against Henry Cejredo, which was decided after an accidental eyepoke stopped the fight in the fourth round. His recent successes include a second-round guillotine choke submission against Deiveson Figueiredo in May 2026 and a knockout victory over Umar Nurmagomedov in August 2026, both of which earned him $100,000 Performance of the Night bonuses.
