The precision striker who rose from street fights to UFC dominance
In short: From sneaking into boxing gyms in Krasnoyarsk to conquering the UFC Bantamweight division, Petr Yan’s journey is defined by technical mastery. A Master of Sport in boxing, Yan uses a sophisticated high guard and switch-stance striking to dismantle opponents, even while battling significant physical injuries.
Born in 1993 to a family of mixed Chinese, Georgian, and Russian descent, Yan’s path to professional combat was unconventional. In his youth, he frequently engaged in street fights, a behavior so disruptive that his family moved locations to prevent it. Seeking to emulate his brother’s boxing training in Dudinka, Petr famously snuck into sessions, eventually dedicating eight years to the sport and achieving the rank of Master of Sport in the 64 kg category. He eventually graduated from the Siberian Federal University with a degree in Physical Culture and Sport. His early training also included ITF taekwondo during his sixth-grade year.
Yan’s professional MMA career began in December 2014, quickly ascending through the Russian promotion Absolute Championship Berkut (ACB). After a period of intense competition, including a controversial split-decision loss to Magomed Magomedov in 2016, Yan secured the ACB bantamweight title in 2017. His success in Russia paved the way for his signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in January 2018. Before reaching the UFC, he also held the interim Bantamweight Championship. His early career included a notable victory over the experienced Brazilian fighter Renato Velame.
In the UFC, Yan became a two-time Bantamweight Champion, known for a style built on compact boxing, pressure footwork, and a layered high guard. His career has been marked by both brilliance and controversy, such as his 2021 title loss via disqualification due to an illegal knee, and his 2022 bout against Sean O'Malley, which many media outlets viewed as a 'robbery.' Despite facing injuries—including a torn ACL and meniscus in 2024—Yan has maintained an elite level, recently reclaiming the championship in a 2025 rematch against Merab Dvalishvili. His technical repertoire is further enhanced by his blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Beyond his athletic feats, he was honored with the Order 'For Merit to the Fatherland' in April 2026.
