How a Shaolin-trained prodigy became the first Chinese fighter to secure a UFC contract
In short: Born in the year of the Tiger, Zhang Mingyang earned the nickname 'Mountain Tiger' from his father. After mastering Sanda in the Shaolin Monastery, he pivoted to mixed martial arts, eventually making history by becoming the first Chinese fighter to win a UFC contract through the Road to UFC program.
Zhang Mingyang’s journey from Anhui province to the global stage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a testament to specialized training and sudden inspiration. Born on August 16, 1998, in Taihe County, Zhang began his martial arts education at age seven under an uncle trained at the Shaolin Monastery. By age twelve, following his own request, he moved to the monastery for formal training. Having mastered Sanda's technical basics, he secured titles as both the National and Henan Province Youth Sanda Champion by thirteen.
A pivotal moment occurred when Zhang discovered a UFC video online while a member of the Shanxi Provincial Sanda Team. This sparked a transition to mixed martial arts (MMA), leading him to move to Qingdao, Shandong, to join Sunkin Fight. His rise was rapid: after winning gold in the 93 kg class at the 2018 Junior World Cup in St. Petersburg, Russia, he achieved a historic milestone on June 9, 2022. By knocking out Tuco Tokkos in the first round during the Road to UFC Season 1, Zhang became the first Chinese fighter to secure a UFC contract via that program.
Zhang's UFC career has been marked by explosive finishes and significant setbacks. After a year-long hiatus due to a waist injury that forced him out of a scheduled 2023 bout against Tyson Pedro, he returned to secure a first-round knockout against Brendson Ribeiro at UFC 298 on February 17, 2024. While he has collected multiple 'Performance of the Night' awards, his career has also seen challenges, including a loss to Johnny Walker in August 2025 and a technical knockout loss to Alonzo Menifield in May 2026.
