The fragile truce in Southern Syria faces a brutal test of sovereignty
In short: Following the fall of the Assad regime, a new struggle for control has ignited in Suwayda. Between Druze militias, Bedouin tribes, and a transitional government, the fight for Southern Syria is no longer just about revolution—it is about survival, identity, and the heavy cost of a fractured peace.
The conflict in Southern Syria, intensifying throughout 2025, is characterized by a complex web of overlapping hostilities. At its core, the violence involves Druze-majority areas in the Suwayda Governorate clashing with the Syrian transitional government and local Muslim Bedouin tribes. While the Druze largely maintained neutrality during the previous Syrian civil war, the post-Assad era has seen them thrust into active combat. By October 2025, reports indicated that over 1,300 people had been killed, with a significant number being Druze civilians.
The instability is driven by several distinct friction points. One major driver is the tension between Druze militias and Bedouin groups, which escalated into a cycle of retaliatory kidnappings in July 202 and open armed clashes after a vegetable merchant was assaulted by Bedouin tribesmen. Simultaneously, the transitional government faces accusations of imposing blockades on self-governed Druze regions, a situation that reportedly intensified in late August 2026. This has led to significant political instability, including the hostage-taking of Suwayda Governor Mustafa al-Bakour in May 2025.
International involvement adds a layer of geopolitical volatility. Israel has engaged in airstrikes to support the Druze, targeting Syrian Army tanks and government buildings in Damascus. While the Syrian Ministry of Health reported casualties from these strikes, the Israeli government has stated its commitment to protecting the Druze community. Despite various ceasefire attempts—including a contested agreement in July 2025—the situation remains volatile, with reports of looting, arson, and continued street fighting in Suwayda city as different factions struggle to impose a unified authority.
