In short: In an alternate 1907, steam power blankets Kyoto in heavy smog, stifling technological progress. When a timid inventor meets a girl trapped by an arranged marriage, they unite to find a lost catalog of electrical concepts, hoping to ignite a future that the world has long delayed.

Sparks of Tomorrow, originally titled 20th Century Electricity Catalog, presents a reimagined Meiji era where the advancement of electricity never took hold. Instead, society remains shackled to steam power, resulting in a landscape defined by industrial haze. Within this setting, 15-year-old Inako Momokawa, the daughter of a sake brewer in Fushimi, struggles under the weight of her father's control and her own feelings of worthlessness. Her only solace is her devout faith in Shinto gods, a stark contrast to the world she is about to enter.

Her path crosses with Kihachi Sakamoto, a free-spirited boy who has abandoned belief in the divine following the mysterious disappearance of his older brother, Seiroku. Seiroku vanished during a war, taking with him the Electrical Catalog—a collection of revolutionary concepts that Kihachi once hoped would usher in a new age. Kihachi, who possesses a natural knack for invention, urges Inako to believe in things she cannot see, sparking a shared ambition to escape their confined lives and reclaim the lost blueprints of the future.

The narrative follows their journey across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures as they evade Inako's forced marriage. Their search for the catalog reveals that the secrets they seek are closer than they realize, with the document held by Inako's own sister. As they uncover the innovations hidden within the pages, they gain a glimpse into the technological transformation they long for, challenging the steam-powered status quo. The story, which began as a light novel in 2018, was adapted into an anime series that aired in 2026, exploring themes of faith, family, and the courage to pursue a vision of progress against overwhelming odds.
