How a 1920s meeting of six Texas officials built an athletic empire
In short: In 1920, six athletic officials met in Houston to align their interests. They didn't just form a league; they created the Southwestern Athletic Conference, a powerhouse of HBCU excellence that has dominated football attendance in its division for decades.
The SWAC began with a small group of administrators from six Texas-based HBCUs, including representatives from Bishop College, Paul Quinn, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, and Wiley University. What started as a localized agreement has evolved into a premier national conference, renowned for producing professional-grade talent, particularly in football.
The conference's history is marked by a significant demographic shift. While the original members were largely private, church-supported institutions, the mid-20th century saw a migration toward state-supported schools. As enrollment surged at public universities, the financial burden of athletics became difficult for private colleges to sustain. This led to a cycle of departures and arrivals: institutions like Huston–Tillotson, Bishop, and Langston eventually left, while state-supported giants like Southern, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M joined the ranks.
On the field, the SWAC is a juggernaut of engagement. In the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), it has led the nation in average home attendance for nearly every year of the division's existence. The scale of its popularity was nearly historic in 1994, when the conference came within 40,000 spectators of reaching one million total fans at home games—a milestone no other non-FBS conference had achieved.
Today, the conference operates with a divisional structure, recently expanding in the 2021–22 academic year with the addition of Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. While the SWAC champion bypasses the FCS playoffs to compete in the Celebration Bowl against the MEAC champion, the conference remains a cornerstone of American collegiate culture.
