How a Texas program rose from 1919 to national championship glory
In short: From its inaugural season in 1919, Abilene Christian University's football program has navigated a complex landscape of conferences and divisions. The Wildcats have evolved from small-school competitors into a Division I force, securing historic national titles along the way.
The history of the Abilene Christian Wildcats is defined by constant movement through the American collegiate sports hierarchy. The program first took the field in 1919, eventually joining the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association between 1925 and 1932. Following a hiatus during the years 1943 to 1945, the team entered a period of significant success within the NAIA, where they secured two national championships in 1973 and 1977, finishing with a perfect 4–0 playoff record. This era of dominance was marked by their exceptional postseason performance. Their success during these years remains a cornerstone of the university's athletic legacy.
The program's trajectory has seen it traverse multiple competitive tiers. Between 1951 and 1972, the Wildcats competed in the College Division, often categorized as a small school. By the 2013 season, the team transitioned into the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), where they have since made two playoff appearances, resulting in a combined record of 2–2. This transition marked a significant step up in competition level. The team has since established itself within this higher tier of collegiate football.
In recent years, conference realignment has reshaped the team's landscape. After leaving the Southland Conference following the 2020–21 season, the Wildcats joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in July 2021. Following a merger between the WAC and the Atlantic Sun Conference after the 2022 season, the team moved to the United Athletic Conference (UAC). As of July 2026, the football-only UAC merged back into the WAC, with Abilene Christian remaining a member under the United Athletic Conference name. This restructuring has created a unique conference identity for the school. The Wildcats continue to navigate these evolving collegiate athletic landscapes.
