In short: Before the SEC and ACC dominated the collegiate landscape, there was the Southern Conference. Established in 1921, this venerable institution acted as the original blueprint for Southern athletics, eventually spawning the very giants that would surpass its own prestige.

The Southern Conference (SoCon) stands as one of the oldest major athletic conferences in the United States, with its origins tracing back to a split from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in early 1921. While it is now a mid-major basketball conference and a respected competitor in the Football Championship Subdivision, its historical footprint is massive. The conference served as the progenitor for two of the most powerful leagues in modern college sports: the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The fragmentation of the SoCon occurred in two major waves. In 1932, thirteen schools located south and west of the Appalachians departed to form the SEC. Decades later, in 1953, seven more institutions—including Clemson, Duke, and North Carolina—withdrew to establish the ACC. This exodus fundamentally altered the landscape of American college athletics, as the newly formed 'power' conferences moved into the top tier of Division I, while the SoCon eventually transitioned to the lower subdivision in 1982.

Despite the loss of its most famous members, the SoCon has maintained a legacy of historic firsts and major upsets. It was the first conference to implement a post-season basketball tournament, a tradition that remains the nation's oldest. In 1980, the conference also hosted the first-ever use of the three-point field goal in a game between Western Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. The league's competitive spirit is frequently defined by 'giant-killing' moments, such as Appalachian State’s 2007 victory over Michigan or Georgia Southern’s historic 2013 win over the Florida Gators.
