How a Los Angeles parody band became a legitimate heavy metal success story
In short: Steel Panther began as a comedic glam metal act playing weekly shows at the Viper Room. While they built a reputation for profane lyrics and parodying 1980s stereotypes, they eventually achieved genuine chart success, sold-out international tours, and a Gold-certified album in the United Kingdom, proving the parody had teeth.
Formed in 1997, the band spent their early years under names like Metal Shop and Metal Skool. The quartet—fronted by Michael Starr and featuring guitarist Satchel—honed their act on the Sunset Strip, playing hair metal covers while developing their own original material. Their transition to the name Steel Panther in 2008 marked a shift toward major label recognition, leading to the 2009 release of their debut album, Feel the Steel. The record performed well, debuting at number one on the Billboard Comedy chart and eventually reaching number 98 on the Billboard 200.
The band's popularity surged in the United Kingdom, where they cultivated a dedicated following. Their second album, Balls Out, debuted at number one on the UK iTunes Rock chart in 2011, outperforming established acts like Megadeth and Metallica. This momentum led to high-profile appearances, including a main stage slot at the 2012 Download Festival, where they performed for over 100,000 people. Their 2012 live DVD, British Invasion, captured their sold-out UK tour, and by October 2024, their debut album had achieved Gold certification in the UK with 100,000 copies sold.
Beyond their musical output, the band has navigated significant lineup changes, most notably the 2021 departure of original bassist Lexxi Foxx. After a rigorous audition process that included a bracket of 32 candidates, the band selected Joe 'Spyder' Lester as their permanent bassist in 2022. Despite their comedic roots and satirical approach to the glam metal lifestyle, Steel Panther has maintained a consistent output of studio albums, including 2014's All You Can Eat and 2023's On The Prowl, while continuing to tour globally and engage with fans through digital content like their YouTube series, Steel Panther TV.
