The winger who became the most successful English football export of his era
In short: In the 1990s, opposition managers faced a tactical nightmare: "stop McManaman, you stop Liverpool." From a schoolboy apprentice to a Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Steve McManaman redefined the role of the English winger on the world stage.
Steve McManaman’s rise at Liverpool was defined by a unique, free-roaming role that allowed him to drift across the pitch. Under manager Roy Evans in the mid-1990s, this versatility helped Liverpool play some of the most aesthetically pleasing attacking football in England. His impact was so profound that during the 1995–96 season, he was the Premier League's top assist provider, and he was later named to the PFA Team of the Year for 1996–97.
His ability to mesmerize defenses made him a tactical obsession for rivals. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson reportedly became so fixated on his movement that it became a recurring theme in team talks, with Peter Schmeichel noting that Ferguson's concerns about McManaman dictating play were a constant during their matches. This influence was so central to Liverpool's success that Bryan Robson of Middlesbrough once remarked that stopping McManaman was the only way to stop the club itself.
McManaman's career reached a global peak with his move to Real Madrid in 1999. This high-profile Bosman free transfer saw him become the first English player to win the UEFA Champions League with a non-English club, and later the first to win it twice. During his four years in Spain, he appeared in 11 cup finals and won eight trophies, including two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies, cementing his status as one of the most decorated English players to play abroad.
