From physics lecturer to cinema's most expensive storyteller
In short: Before becoming one of India's highest-paid directors, Bandreddi Sukumar spent seven years teaching mathematics and physics. Today, he is celebrated for complex, multi-layered screenplays that favor emotional depth and non-linear narratives over traditional, predictable storytelling structures.
Sukumar's transition from academia to cinema was driven by a desire to escape the mundane. After nearly seven years as a lecturer at Aditya Junior College in Kakinada, he and colleague Prakash Toleti decided to pursue creative work. His directorial debut, Arya (2004), was a massive commercial success, earning him both a Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu and a Nandi Award for Best Screenplay Writer. He initially entered the industry as a writer and later assisted V. V. Vinayak on the film Dil. His early career also included working as an assistant director for Manasichi Choodu.
His filmmaking style is defined by intricate, non-linear screenplays that often revisit scenes to reveal fine details. Unlike many contemporary films that reveal a protagonist's obsession late in the story, Sukumar's early work broke conventions by revealing such motivations at the beginning. This complexity has earned him a reputation as an intelligent writer, though his habit of improvising on set often extends production timelines. His creative process frequently involves making significant changes to footage that has already been filmed. This approach is often used to refine the emotional resonance of his storytelling.
Sukumar has achieved significant commercial milestones, particularly with the Pushpa franchise. Pushpa: The Rise (2021) was the highest-grossing Indian film of its year, earning a total gross of ₹373 crores. His subsequent film, Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), achieved the distinction of becoming the third highest-grossing Indian film of all time. His work often features protagonists with grey shades, prioritizing emotional curves to connect with his audience. His filmography includes the period action drama Rangasthalam, which was a major success. He also produces various projects under his own production banner, Sukumar Writings.
