In short: On August 25, 2002, the professional wrestling landscape underwent a massive transformation. This edition of SummerSlam introduced the new WWE name and the first brand extension era. It featured intense battles between the Raw and SmackDown! rosters, marking the beginning of what fans now call the Ruthless Aggression Era.

A significant milestone for the company, the 2002 SummerSlam took place at New York's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. After the promotion rebranded from World Wrestling Federation in May, this edition marked the inaugural SummerSlam using the WWE title. This edition also marked the first time the event featured the newly implemented brand extension, which had been introduced in March to split the roster into the Raw and SmackDown! divisions.

The card was defined by high-stakes championship battles and significant character arcs. In the main event on the SmackDown! brand, Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock to capture the WWE Undis.Disputed Championship, utilizing his signature F-5. This victory established Lesnar as a major star, while The Rock would soon enter a five-month hiatus following a period of intense crowd hostility. On the Raw side, an Unsanctioned Street Fight saw Shawn Michaels return to the ring for the first time since 1997, defeating Triple H via a jackknife roll-up after a brutal encounter.

The event also showcased the shifting landscape of the roster. Rob Van Dam secured the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Chris Benoit, who had moved his title from the Raw brand to SmackDown! during a period of contract shifts. Other notable performances included Rey Mysterio's victory over Kurt Angle and The Undertaker's win against Test. This era, known as the Ruthless Aggression Era, would eventually see the separation of the Undisputed Championship into the World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Championship following the fallout of this event.
