The versatile musician shaping the next generation of orchestral excellence
In short: From her first public violin performance at age three to conducting global icons, Suzie Collier has built a formidable career. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, she balances elite conducting and violin performance with a profound dedication to musical education and creative exploration.
The musical path of Suzie Collier commenced remarkably young, following her London birth to violinists Lila Wong and Derek Collier. She made her first public appearance as a violinist at just three years old. She excelled during formal studies at the Royal Academy of Music; after winning the Sisselle Wray scholarship at 18, she attained various accolades, such as the LRAM Violin Teachers' Diploma and an ARCM Violin Performers' Diploma. She also earned a GRSM degree with Honours. Her early training was supported by a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.
Collier’s influence extends through both performance and pedagogy. She began teaching as a violin professor at the Royal Academy of Music's Junior Department in 1986 and conducted its Senior Strings Chamber Orchestra from 1988 until 2024. Her pedagogical legacy includes students such as Thomas Gould, Mayah Kadish, and Francesca Barritt. She has also led masterclasses at the University of Cambridge and MIT. Her teaching has also reached institutions like the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
As a conductor, Collier has worked with prestigious ensembles like the Metropole Orkest and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, notably for Quincy Jones' 90th Birthday Celebration in 2023. She is also a frequent collaborator with her son, Jacob Collier, conducting his orchestral recordings and performing duets with him globally. Beyond the stage, her 'Suzie Explores' initiative fosters creativity through masterclasses and podcasts featuring luminaries like Yo-Yo Ma and Steve Vai. In 2025, she conducted the Britten Sinfonia at the London Barbican. She also led the first Jacob Collier Audience Orchestra at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall.
