A dark fantasy reimagining of Arthurian legend where the King is a tragic villain
In short: In this open-world RPG, the legendary King Arthur is not a hero but a desperate ruler whose obsession with legacy fueled horrific experiments. Six centuries after his conquest of Avalon, the Wyrdness is returning, and players must decide whether to destroy his soul or attempt to fix his broken kingdom.
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, developed by the Polish studio Questline and published by Awaken Realms, transports players to a grim, dark fantasy version of Arthurian myth. The narrative begins 600 years after Arthur Pendragon led survivors from the plague-stricken Homelands to conquer Avalon, a domain once controlled by the Fore-Dwellers. To secure victory, Arthur and Merlin utilized Menhir totems to suppress the Wyrdness, a primordial force capable of manifesting monsters and entire landscapes. However, the cost of this conquest was high, involving unethical human experiments on Arthur himself and his warriors, including the disillusioned Caradoc.
The game begins as the Menhirs fail and the Red Death plague resurfaces. The player, an asylum inmate, is freed by Caradoc and bound to fragments of Arthur's soul. As they traverse the open world, they must navigate a web of political instability involving the kingdom of Kamelot, the Dál Riata tribes, and the sovereign city of Cuanacht. Throughout the journey, the player uncovers the truth of Arthur's descent into obsession. The narrative culminates in complex moral choices, such as destroying Arthur's soul to end the cycle of destruction, sacrificing oneself to restore him, or attempting to reforge the nation using his power.
Beyond its narrative depth, the game features a vast open world with over 200 side quests, crafting, and alchemy systems. While reviewers have praised its exploration and world-building, often comparing it to The Elder Scrolls series, the title has faced criticism regarding technical performance, repetitive environment design, and inconsistent character model fidelity. Despite these flaws, the game offers a unique, choice-driven experience that expands upon the universe created by writer Krzysztof Piskorski, which first gained prominence through a 2018 board game and the 2020 roguelike Tainted Grail: Conquest.
A hidden ending, accessible via the Weaver Life Spindle, reveals a deeper cosmic tragedy: Arthur was the human reincarnation of a Fore-Dweller prince murdered by his own kind for his fascination with mortality. His death triggered the creation of the Red Death by the grieving Fore-Dweller Queen, forcing Arthur's return. By restoring his original form, the player can eliminate the plague and calm the Wyrdness, allowing Avalon to return to a natural state, effectively erasing the legend of the King.
