Tana Mongeau built a career on unfiltered storytelling and high-profile internet controversies
In short: Rising to fame as a teenage YouTuber, Tana Mongeau transformed personal drama into a massive media brand. From hosting a chaotic, failed convention to staging a non-binding wedding for content, she has navigated the blurred lines between reality and performance, consistently capturing the attention of millions across various digital platforms.
Born in 1998 in Henderson, Nevada, Tana Mongeau first gained prominence through unfiltered storytime videos on YouTube. Her career expanded rapidly into podcasting, reality television, and music. Her YouTube channels have collectively surpassed 1 billion views, and she has collaborated with numerous high-profile social media personalities. Despite her success, Mongeau has faced significant public scrutiny, including a 2017 FBI investigation regarding a bomb threat against an airport and controversies involving her own past use of racial slurs.
Mongeau is perhaps best known for TanaCon, a 2018 convention intended as an alternative to VidCon. The event, held in Anaheim, California, collapsed on its first day due to poor organization, leaving thousands of attendees waiting in the sun without adequate food or water. The failure drew comparisons to the Fyre Festival. Later, in 2019, she staged a highly publicized wedding to Jake Paul in Las Vegas. While the event was broadcast on pay-per-view for $50, it was later revealed that the marriage was not legally binding, with Mongeau describing the ceremony as a lighthearted stunt for content.
Her career has remained marked by ongoing public discourse. In 2024, she alleged that YouTuber Cody Ko had sex with her when she was 17 and he was 25, sparking widespread condemnation of Ko. Simultaneously, her own podcast, Cancelled, faced backlash when her co-host, Brooke Schofield, was criticized for resurfaced tweets regarding the killing of Trayvon Martin. Mongeau, who identifies as bisexual and is currently sober, continues to maintain a significant presence in pop culture, balancing her personal life with a career that thrives on constant, often polarizing, engagement.
