How a British-American designer redefined visibility on global television
In short: From a denim factory in Greater Manchester to the heights of Netflix stardom, Tan France has navigated a complex journey. His path through the fashion industry and media has been shaped by personal resilience against racism, colorism, and the search for authentic representation.
Born Tanveer Wasel Safdar in Doncaster in 1983, France’s early life was marked by the intersection of his Pakistani heritage and his experiences as a gay man in the UK. Growing up in a household with deep Muslim roots, he faced significant challenges, including physical and verbal racism. In his 2019 memoir, *Naturally Tan*, he detailed the alienation of being one of the few people of colour in his community and the impact of Islamophobia following the 9/11 attacks.
His professional foundation was built on technical skill and industry grit. Inspired by Disney-themed clothing produced in his grandparents' denim factory in Bury, France began learning to construct and embellish garments by age 13. Before his television breakthrough, he worked as a designer and director for major retailers like Zara, Selfridges, and Bershka. His entrepreneurial career included founding Kingdom & State in 2011, a brand designed to align with Mormon clothing guidelines in Utah, and serving as CEO of the Rachel Parcell Inc clothing line.
France’s transition to a global media figure began with the 2018 Netflix reboot of *Queer Eye*. As the resident fashion expert, he brought a new level of visibility to South Asian and LGBTQ+ identities on Western television. Beyond styling, his work has addressed systemic issues, such as his 2022 BBC Two documentary, *Beauty and the Bleach*, which explored the nuances of colourism. Today, he continues to influence both fashion and social discourse through various hosting roles and digital platforms.
