The Castle on the Hill: A century of aviation, activism, and athletic intensity
In short: Teaneck High School, a Tudor-style landmark in New Jersey, has evolved from a 1934 aviation pioneer into a modern hub for specialized academies. Beyond its academic reputation, the school is defined by a storied athletic history, a fierce Thanksgiving football rivalry, and a legacy of notable alumni across diverse industries.
Opened in 1928, the school building is famously known as The Castle on the Hill due to its Tudor palace architecture. It has served as a central fixture of the Teaneck community for nearly a century, expanding with a new wing in 1936 and undergoing significant renovations in 2003–04. Today, the school functions as a comprehensive institution, housing specialized academies focused on science, technology, and the performing arts, while maintaining a student body of over 1,200.
The school’s history is marked by notable milestones in social and educational progress. In 1934, it became the first high school in the United States to offer a vocational aviation program, training students to earn pilot licenses. Decades later, the institution became a site for civil rights advocacy; in 1964, the district officially desegregated, and in 1972, the school was the center of a landmark legal battle led by the ACLU, which secured the right for female students to participate in sports teams when no equivalent women's program existed.
Athletics remain a core component of the school's culture, with teams known as the Highwaymen and Highwaywomen—a nod to the school's location overlooking Route 4. The school’s competitive spirit is perhaps most visible in its annual Thanksgiving football game against Hackensack High School, a tradition dating back to 1931. Beyond the gridiron, the school has produced a wide array of successful graduates, including investigative journalists, film producers, professional athletes, and authors, reflecting the institution's long-standing influence on its students' trajectories.
