From Oak Ridge to the NFL: The evolution of wide receiver Tee Higgins
In short: Tee Higgins emerged from a standout high school career in Tennessee to become a central figure for the Cincinnati Bengals. Beyond his athletic achievements, his professional journey has been marked by record-setting rookie performances, high-stakes championship appearances, and a profound personal connection forged through an unexpected on-field tragedy.
Born in 1999, Tamaurice William "Tee" Higgins excelled as a multi-sport athlete in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, before committing to Clemson University. His college career was defined by immediate impact, including a 2019 National Championship win. By 2020, he entered the NFL draft, where the Cincinnati Bengals selected him with the 33rd overall pick. His transition to the professional level was seamless; he tied a Bengals rookie record with 67 receptions in his debut season, a mark later surpassed by Ja'Marr Chase.
Higgins' tenure in Cincinnati has been characterized by both statistical milestones and significant adversity. During a 2022 game against the Buffalo Bills, Higgins was involved in a play that resulted in Damar Hamlin suffering commotio cordis. The incident, which led to the game's cancellation, left Higgins deeply affected. However, the two athletes eventually formed a friendship following Hamlin's recovery. This period also saw Higgins navigate the complexities of professional identity, including his desire to move beyond the "Ochocinco 2.0" moniker associated with his original jersey number, 85, in favor of his own legacy.
The physical demands of the NFL have frequently tested Higgins, with various injuries—including concussions and recurring hamstring issues—impacting his availability. Despite these setbacks, he has remained a vital component of the Bengals' offense. His career trajectory reached a new financial milestone in 2025 when he signed a four-year, $115 million contract extension after receiving the franchise tag for the second consecutive year. Throughout his time in the league, Higgins has consistently demonstrated resilience, evolving from a promising rookie into a seasoned veteran who continues to shape his own narrative within the organization.
