How a web novel transformed into a global multimedia phenomenon
In short: What starts as a serialized web novel can evolve into a massive cross-media franchise. From its digital origins on Tapas to a high-stakes anime adaptation, follow the journey of a story that captured millions and sparked massive fan petitions for even higher production standards.
The journey of The Beginning After the End began on January 18, 2017, when South Korean-American writer Brandon Lee, known as TurtleMe, started serializing the web novel on Tapas. The narrative follows King Grey, who is reborn as Arthur Leywin in the magical continent of Dicathen. This reincarnation allows the protagonist to apply his previous life's knowledge, which he held at the age of 38, to a new world filled with magic and fantastical creatures.
The franchise expanded significantly when a webtoon adaptation, illustrated by Fuyuki23, launched on Tapas on July 7, 2018. This adaptation was specifically designed for the North American market, according to an executive at Kakao Entertainment. The popularity of the visual medium led to a print release through Yen Press, which had announced the move at New York Comic Con 2021. By August 2026, eleven print volumes had been released to readers.
The transition to animation brought the series to television via Studio A-Cat. Running from 2 April until 18 June 2025 on Fuji TV's +Ultra block, the debut season was reduced to 12 episodes following the eleventh instalment. The second season followed a similar schedule, airing from April 2 to June 24, 2026. Despite its success, the series has faced scrutiny; Alex Trent of Game Rant noted that 40,000 fans signed a petition demanding a remake due to dissatisfaction with the animation quality.
