Why a Scottish castle became the ultimate stage for televised psychological warfare

In short: The American version of The Traitors transformed a remote Highland fortress into a high-stakes arena of deception. By blending seasoned reality stars with everyday people, the show created a modern, hyperdramatic take on the classic party game Mafia, where trust is a liability and betrayal is the only path to victory.

Premiering on January 12, 2023, the first season of the American series utilized the same Ardross Castle location and production team, Studio Lambert, as the British original. Host Alan Cumming oversaw a group of twenty contestants, split evenly between reality television veterans and members of the general public. The game dynamics were immediate and unforgiving; one participant, Kevin Greene, was forced to exit on the first day due to a positive COVID-19 test, necessitating his replacement by Geraldine Moreno.

The core mechanism of the show relies on a secret hierarchy. While the majority of players are designated as Faithful, a small group is chosen by the host to act as Traitors. Each night, these Traitors select a player to eliminate, or murder, from the game. During the day, the entire group competes in physical and mental challenges to build a collective prize fund, followed by a nightly Round Table where they attempt to identify and banish a Traitor. If a Traitor survives until the end, they claim the entire pot; if only Faithful remain, the money is split among them.

The season reached its conclusion on February 28, 2023, with Cirie Fields securing the win as a Traitor, while Quentin Jiles and Andie Vanacore finished as the runners-up. The production received significant critical praise, earning a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics highlighted the show's ability to balance intense psychological tension with a theatrical, almost absurd atmosphere. The project's success was further validated when it received the Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program award at the 75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, cementing its status as a standout entry in the competition reality genre.
