How a chance encounter at a Nashville bar launched a country music era
In short: In 2006, Hillary Scott spotted a familiar face from a MySpace page at a local bar. That single introduction didn't just spark a conversation; it formed the foundation of Lady A, one of the most successful country groups of the decade.
The formation of the group, originally known as Lady Antebellum, began in May 2006 when Scott approached Charles Kelley after recognizing him from his music online. Alongside Dave Haywood, the trio began writing songs, starting with 'All We'd Ever Need'. While the song was initially intended for Scott as a solo performer, she convinced Kelley to turn it into a duet, establishing the group's signature collaborative sound.
The group's ascent was rapid. After signing with Capitol Nashville in 2007, they released 'Love Don't Live Here' in October 2007, which reached number 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart by early 2008. Their sophomore success was even more profound; the single 'Need You Now' topped the country charts for five weeks in late 2009 and reached number 2 on the Hot 100. The accompanying album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with nearly 481,000 first-week sales.
Beyond the hits, the group's identity underwent a significant shift in June 2020. Amidst the George Floyd protests, they announced a name change from Lady Antebellum to Lady A. The decision was made to avoid the racist connotations associated with the Antebellum South, with the band expressing deep sorrow for any hurt caused by the original name.
Scott's personal journey is also woven into her discography. Her 2016 solo gospel album, 'Love Remains', which featured her family and reached number 7 on the Billboard 200, was inspired by her personal faith and experiences, including the loss of a pregnancy that inspired the single 'Thy Will'.
