In short: Formed in 2014, the trio Midland emerged from a chance musical collaboration at a wedding in Jackson Hole. By blending California-style harmonies with a neotraditional country aesthetic, they have secured Grammy nominations, chart-topping singles, and a reputation for fashion-forward style that echoes the legendary Nudie suits of country music history.

The origins of Midland trace back to August 2013, when Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson, and Cameron Duddy gathered in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for Duddy's wedding. Wystrach and Carson arrived early, and after playing music together on a porch, they recognized a creative chemistry. By January 2014, the trio convened at the Sonic Ranch studio in El Paso, Texas, for a 10-day session that solidified their identity as a band. They eventually settled in Texas, taking their name from a Dwight Yoakam song titled Fair to Midland.

Each member brought a distinct background to the group. Wystrach grew up in a family that owned a honky tonk and later pursued modeling and acting. Carson, raised on an Oregon farm, was a lifelong songwriter and musician. Duddy, who found music to be a vital emotional outlet during his youth, also built a successful career as a music video director, winning an MTV Video Music Award for his work with Bruno Mars. This diverse experience informs their sound, which critics frequently compare to the 1980s work of George Strait, the Urban Cowboy era, and the vocal harmonies of The Eagles.

Since signing with Big Machine Records in 2016, the band has maintained a prolific output. Their debut single, Drinkin' Problem, earned them two Grammy nominations in 2018, the same year they won the ACM Award for New Vocal Group of the Year. Beyond music, the band has expanded into lifestyle branding, launching their own tequila, insõlito, in 2020 and a cigar line, Palomino Longneck, in 2024. Their discography continues to evolve, with their fifth studio album, Stages, released in June 2026. Whether through their music or their distinctive, Nudie-inspired stage attire, Midland has established a unique presence in the modern country landscape.
