In short: It began with a simple, spontaneous thought: "Is there a detective on the plane?" This single sentence from author Nigojū sparked the creation of The Detective Is Already Dead, a series that transformed a random moment of inspiration into a multi-media franchise involving manga, anime, and spin-offs.

The series follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, an 18-year and a half-year-old student who possesses a peculiar, self-described "trouble magnet" condition. Since childhood, Kimihiko has been prone to attracting criminal activity, ranging from stumbling into drug dealer transactions to being interrogated by police as a suspect. This compulsion led to a pivotal encounter during his third year of junior high, when he was kidnapped and forced to assist a woman named Siesta on an international flight. Siesta, a self-proclaimed "legendary detective" and member of the Twelve Tuners, helped him prevent a plane hijacking.

The narrative complexity deepens through the shifting roles of its cast. While Siesta was initially a minor character, her importance grew after Nigojū’s manuscript won the MF Bunko Newcomer Award. The story involves intricate connections, such as Nagisa Natsunagi, an 18-year-old student who received a donor heart, and Charlotte Arisaka Anderson, a 17-year-old assassin who became an admirer of Siesta after a lost fight. Even the concept of identity is fluid, as seen in the character Hel, an archenemy of Siesta whose consciousness can take control of Nagisa's body.

Since its publication by Media Factory in November 2019, the franchise has expanded significantly. The light novel series has reached thirteen volumes, supported by various manga adaptations in magazines like Monthly Comic Alive. The anime adaptation by ENGI, which aired between July and September 2021, brought the story to a global audience through platforms like Crunchyroll. The franchise continues to grow through spin-offs, including works focused on characters like Nagisa Natsunagi and Yui Saikawa, proving that a single, wandering thought can build an entire world.
