A supernatural notebook turns a high school student into a vigilante killer
In short: When bored in the Shinigami world, the deity Ryuk drops a notebook into the human realm. For high schooler Light Yagami, this tool—the Death Note—offers a terrifying power: the ability to kill anyone whose name is written within its pages.
Directed by Tetsurō Araki at Madhouse, the 37-episode series premiered on Nippon Television on October 4, 2006. Rather than focusing solely on the concept of justice or morality, Araki sought to highlight the most compelling elements of the original manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. To ensure the complex narrative remained clear for viewers who could not "turn back pages" like manga readers, writer Toshiki Inoue tweaked the chronology and utilized flashbacks to build tension. The production was handled by a committee including VAP and Shueisha. In North America, Viz Media provided digital download services during the initial broadcast. This release marked a significant milestone for legally available Japanese anime in the United States.
The series follows Light Yagami's descent into vigilantism as he attempts to rid the world of evil. This psychological battle is characterized by tactical one-upmanship between Light and his nemesis, the detective L. Critics have noted the show's heavy serialized nature makes it highly engaging, with some comparing its addictive quality to the series Lost. The narrative explores profound themes of capital punishment, the corruption of power, and the nuances of morality. The series' soundtrack features music by Yoshihisa Hirano and Hideki Taniuchi. Various themes were performed by the bands Nightmare and Maximum the Hormone.
The production was a delicate challenge, requiring detailed scripts and specific instructions to capture the manga's depth. The anime's impact was significant enough to warrant two compilation films: Relight – Visions of a God, which aired in August 2007, and Relight 2 – L's Successors, released in August 2008. While the first film was advertised as a retelling from Ryuk's perspective, it ultimately follows the original narrative with added dialogue and scenes. The anime earned the Best TV Anime award at the 2007 Tokyo International Anime Fair. Additionally, IGN ranked the show at 51st on its list of the top 100 animated series.
