How a mortal girl used poison and lies to outmaneuver faerie royalty
In short: In the treacherous world of Elfhame, humans are viewed with deep disdain. Yet, Jude Duarte refuses to be a victim. Through the dangerous practice of mithridatism and the unique ability to lie, she navigates a landscape of betrayal, political coups, and a prophecy that threatens to destroy a throne.
The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black follows Jude Duarte, a mortal girl thrust into the faerie realm of Elfhame after the fae Madoc kills her parents. Living alongside powerful, often violent creatures, Jude must survive the contempt of the fae. To protect herself from being enchanted by their mind magic, she relies on a geas provided by Prince Dain and practices mithridatism—the intentional ingestion of small doses of poison to build immunity.
The political landscape of Elfhame is defined by shifting allegiances and ancient prophecies. A prediction foretold that Prince Cardan Greenbriar's arrival would herald the throne's downfall and the monarchy's end. This prediction led to a childhood of squalor and mistreatment. The series tracks the complex power struggle between characters like the ambitious Prince Balekin, the formidable Queen Orlagh of the Undersea, and the strategist Jude, who eventually maneuvers Cardan into a position where he serves as her puppet king for a year and a day.
The narrative reaches a climax when Madoc attempts to seize power using a sword forged by the blacksmith Grimsen, designed to rival the Blood Crown. During a confrontation, Cardan breaks the crown, triggering a curse that transforms him into a snake. The resolution of the prophecy—that a great ruler rises from his spilled blood—occurs when Jude kills the snake, allowing Cardan to emerge in his human form. The duo eventually ascends to the throne together, banishing Madoc to the mortal world.
