In short: Named heir by King Viserys I, Rhaenyra Targaryen faced an unprecedented challenge to her rule. Her struggle for the Iron Throne ignited the Dance of the Dragons, a violent succession war that nearly extinguished the dragons of Westeros and reshaped the fate of the Seven Kingdoms.

Rhaenyra Targaryen, a central figure in George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy series, serves as the primary inspiration for the television adaptation House of the Dragon. Born 97 years after Aegon's Conquest, she was the only surviving child of King Viserys I and Queen Aemma Arryn following the deaths of her infant brothers. Her ascent to power was marked by a historic, unprecedented appointment as heir to the Iron Throne, a decision that set the stage for a brutal conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The conflict arose when the Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower led a coup to install Rhaenyra's half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen, arguing that Rhaenyra was unfit to rule due to her sex. This split the realm into two factions: the 'Blacks,' who supported Rhaenyra's claim, and the 'Greens,' representing House Hightower. The war was characterized by extreme violence, including the death of Rhaenyra's son Lucerys Velaryon in a dragon battle and a retaliatory assassination of Aegon II's heir, Jaehaerys.

Rhaenyra's reign was ultimately short-lived and marked by instability. After seizing King's Landing, she faced a depleted treasury, growing paranoia, and a violent riot in the capital. Her story concludes tragically when she is killed by Aegon II's dragon, Sunfyre, who burns her alive in front of her son, Aegon the Younger. The war's devastation was so profound that nearly all dragons were killed, leading to their eventual extinction two decades later.
