A professional killer forced to live as an ordinary citizen in Osaka
In short: Imagine being the most feared assassin in the Japanese underworld, only to be ordered to stop killing. This is the premise of The Fable, a massive manga success where a lethal hitman must navigate the mundane complexities of normal life while hiding his deadly skillset.
Written and illustrated by Katsuhisa Minami, The Fable is a seinen manga series that explores the friction between a professional assassin's lethal nature and the requirements of civilian existence. The story follows a hitman known simply as "Fable," an individual so skilled that he is feared by politicians, mobsters, and the Japanese underworld alike. Under orders from his sponsor, Fable must undergo a radical lifestyle change: he is banned from killing anyone for an entire year and must live as an ordinary citizen in Osaka.
To facilitate this transition, Fable adopts the pseudonym Akira Sato. He is accompanied by his assistant, Rei Kanda—who possesses a photographic memory—under the pseudonym Yoko Sato. While Fable attempts to integrate into society, he must contend with various criminal elements in Osaka, including members of the Maguro Group, a yakuza clan that assists in his relocation. This tension between his violent profession and his new identity forms the core of the narrative.
The series has achieved significant commercial success, with over 25 million copies in circulation as of June 2024. Its cultural impact is evidenced by its recognition in the industry; in 2017, the manga won the 41st Kodansha Manga Award in the General category. The franchise has expanded beyond the original manga, which ran from November 2014 to November 2019, into live-action films and an anime television series produced by Tezuka Productions.
The narrative continues through several iterations, including the sequel series The Fable: The Second Contact, which ran from July 2021 to July 2023, and a third installment, The Fable: The Third Secret, which began serialization in March 2025.
