Why this Japanese role-playing game features a script longer than War and Peace
In short: Translating the sequel to a cult classic RPG proved so monumental that it nearly bankrupted its publisher. With a script exceeding 700,000 words, the English localization of this epic adventure required years of effort, eventually arriving nearly a decade after the game first debuted in Japan.
Developed by Nihon Falcom and released in 2006, the second installment of the Trails series continues the journey of Estelle, a young woman searching for her missing companion, Joshua. The narrative unfolds within the nation of Liberl, where political tensions and ancient mysteries collide. As Estelle navigates the Bracer Guild and confronts the shadowy Ouroboros organization, she uncovers the dark truth behind the Hamel incident—a tragedy involving a false flag operation that once threatened to ignite a war between Erebonia and Liberl.
The sheer scale of the game’s writing presented a significant hurdle for Xseed Games, which acquired the localization rights in 2010. The original Japanese text contained over 1.5 million characters, and the English script eventually totaled 716,401 words. This volume dwarfs literary giants like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and War and Peace. The translation process was further complicated by the departure of lead translator Andrew Dice, whose personal struggles delayed the project, forcing Xseed staff to complete the work before its 2015 English release.
Beyond its narrative depth, the game introduced tactical innovations like chain crafts, allowing party members to execute simultaneous attacks. While the original 2006 release faced technical challenges—including the need for a multi-disc format on the PlayStation Portable—the franchise has since seen a resurgence. A 2026 remake for modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 has garnered universal acclaim, offering a re-orchestrated soundtrack, full voice acting, and refined gameplay mechanics that honor the original's legacy while modernizing its presentation for a new generation of players.
